Today was the last day of our presentation. Everybody did a good job and it was very interesting to see and listen to what other people had researched for their paper.
Goto-ken, despite technical trouble that you had before you begin, you spoke with a lot of confidence and I really got absorbed in your talk.
Sumire, I also wrote about post-heroic leadership in my essay, so it was very interesting to see how other people researched on it.
Atsuko, you, I think, was the most confident speaker.. Good job!
Moe, I loved the way you began the talk with an timely topic of snow, and thanks a lot for nodding a lot when I was presenting. It really relieved my tension.
Mao-kun, Populism is obviously a difficult topic, but your talk was very clear and made the topic easy to understand. Since Politics is one of my possible major in future, I definetely have to learn more about it.
Sayaka, everyone could tell the you prepared a lot from your presentation. Although I am a DOUTOR person, your presentation made me wanna go more often to Starbucks too :)
Shiori, the video clip that you included in your presentation was very interesting. Where did you find it? lol
Miku, you effectively used image in the presentation and that made it easy for us to understand your presentation.
Chisato, I could well tell your passion toward cars from your presentation :) Your simple slides were also very nice.
Maya(K), from when you topic was only in the stage of outline, I was sure the paper and presentation is going to be so interesting and it really was.
Ayaka, as a woman, I was very curious about this topic. It was very interesting that when I got home, I saw a TV program about the Glass-Ceiling to woman's career. What a coincidence!!
Shiori(Debater), the image you used was so cute. We should definetely go to Disney theme park together someday:)
Xiaotain, your presentation was very organized and I was so absorbed into it that I did not realize you have as much as 50 slides!!
Maya(H), the way you begin your presentation was very interesting. Also, the content was very simple to understand.
Mari, it reminded me of the world history class in high school. Is there any particular reason why you chose him?
Risako, you did a good job a broken knee lol Jut kidding, your presentation was very simple and the talk was slow enough to understand the content well.
Mako, you really looked like having fun when presenting and the content also were very interesting and useful.
Kengo, the video-clip of Beatle's song smoothed the the tension I had after I finished my presentation, so thanks for that :) It was very unique that you considered a band as an organization and analyzed it.
Yusuke, it was the first time for me to heard of Jack Dorsey so it was very interesting for me to listen to your presentation. You also answered to the questions with confidence and that I think was really cool.
Again I learned a lot from your presentation. There a many point that I regret in my today's presentation, but I hope from the tips that I learned from your presentation and the experience I had today, I can improve the ability to present in the future :)

Guest lecture from Hibiya-sensei !
Today we had another guest lecture, this time from our university president, Hibiya-sense.
Although leadership is the title of our class and so was her lecture, the points that she raised in the lecture were also practical for our current life in and out of ICU. Following are the points that I especially found impressive.
• Do study second language
You can get wider perspective and chance
• Follow your passion
×major=job, keep learning new things
• Money follows those who seek it
Don't use money as a reason for not doing something
• Everything is possible! できる!
• Do exercise
Not only make you fit, but also do good to your mental state
☆Bring out your potential and find your calling in ICU.
She was so charming and interesting person. Now I think it is true that smile and positive atmosphere is infectious, because I am feeling very positive toward my life.
I am very greatful for her to come and give us lecture in her busy schedule. Also, thank you very much Ken again for creating thus wonderful opportunity. I am so glad that I chose this class as my R&W to have great experience like this.

ch10 Tenacious Creativity
(I realized that I had lost track of what I had been reading and forgot to write about ch9...but anyway, let me sum up ch10)
Ch10 was the last chapter of the first part of the book. It went by very fast and the fact that we've learnt 10 leadership techniques already in this short period of time is surprising. There was a lot to learn, but I think it was because it is written along with the true stories that we could really enjoy reading this book till the end.
Ch10 was about creativity, and how important it is to be creative even under difficult circumstances. For this, both teamwork and individual commitment was emphasized in the stories that was given. Ch10 was kind of like a sum up of the all chapters and things were connected a lot. The author mentioned that leaders should be always prepared for things to go wrong, which relate to being optimistic because, to be optimistic, you need to be confident in the future and you need to be aware of what might happen in the future. He also mentioned that when strategies you come up with fail, think of new one, which was also mentioned earlier in the book when Shackleton said "Now we go home.".
Even when we are under no pressure, it is quite difficult to be creative, much less under difficult situation. But through several negotiation trials that we had in class, I realized that if we really try to think of an idea, it will often come up to us. I know the scale that the author was talking about is much bigger than my experience in class, but still, to actually try something, I think makes huge difference to the outcomes, so we should never be despair in difficulties and always look for hope.

Special lecture from Mr. Kitashiro
On Monday we had a lecture from our special guest, Mr. Kitashiro. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to learn about leadership at first hand from a person who have great experience for leading a huge number of people.
Even though he is great and he had the "aura" that tells he is very important, at the same time, he was very positive and always smiling, which created very comfortable environment in the entire class room. As some of you were saying on Tuesday class, some of the skills that he taught us to become a great leader are somewhat familiar to what we have learnt from our class and book. I also thought so. But To see an actual leader in our age who practice the same kind of skills as Shackleton who lived long time ago, for me, made huge difference to the way I look at those skills.
Among all the message he gave us , "Be an attractive person" was my favorite. To be an admired leader is, I think, all about being attractive whether it to be honest, positive or confident. Those who have these characteristics are attractive even if they are not in the position of company president. I will work hard and one day I hope I will be one of that kind.
I am very greatful to have the opportunity to meet very great person like Mr. Kit at the early age of my life. Thank you very much Mr. Kitashiro indeed for coming to our school and giving us very precious lecture.
Also, thank you very much Ken, for creating this wonderful opportunity. I will treasure this experience for the rest of my life :)

Thoughts on ch7 "lighten up"
In chapter7, "lighten up!", the importance of finding something to celebrate and to laugh at was mentioned. Before reading this chapter, I thought laughing in a hard situation is not only difficult but also inappropriate because then others might think you are not taking that situation seriously.
However, the chapter gave me some good reasons to have happy celebration in tough situation and that is...
It can break the spiral of depression and stimulate creativity.
It can give people the chance to step back and look at the issue with wider perspectives.
It can reduce such emotion as fear and tention.
It can reorganize the team.
These great effect of celebration could be seen from the many company that was used as examples in the chaper and also from the story of Endurance which successed in doing "celebration" in tough situation and overcoming that hardship. It seems "celebration" really works but I still think it is definetely not an easy thing to do especially in an tough situation.

Thoughts on conflict solving and a book
Today in class we talked about conflict. We did an questionaire by which we were divide into five type of handling conflict, problem-solving owl, smoothing teddybear, forcing shark, compromising fox, and the withdrawing turtle. I was classified into the owl, who put emphasis on both goal and personal relationship when handling conflict. I agree with this result. When I had conflict with friends or family in the past, I always tried to confront the problem directly, and tried talking or even exchanging letters wit that person when the situation is worse, to meet the best goal and also to preserve the good relationship.
What I do not understand is why owl represents problem solving in this questionaire. So, I did a little research on "animal symbolim" and found this page.
http://www.whats-your-sign.com/animal-symbolism-owl.html
(I only researched about owl so if you are interested in other four, I think you can look for them too in this website)
According to this website, owl is often used to symbolize wisdom, intelligence, foresight and many other attribute mainly because the owl is a great foreteller of weather conditions and because it can see in the dark. So I personally think owl was used for problem solving because it can seek light or a way(goal and relationship) even in the dark situation (conflict).
So that is my hypothesis. What is yours for your own animal? Thank you for reading.

Leading at the edge ch4-ch7 review
Today I would like to do the review of what I have read in the leading at the edge from chapter4 to chapter7.
In chapter 4, Stamina, the importance of taking care of not only other people but also yourself, was stated. I think this was the first time the author mentioned the leader characteristic Shackleton failed to have, which was also interesting to read. It was also stated how important it is to have outlets for our feeling, be it friends, family, or diary. I think these are all we can things we can also apply to our daily lives to relieve our stress, so I found them very helpful.
In chapter 5, The team message, the importance of having shared identity as a team, communicating well, performance evaluation of the followers was emphasized.
In chapter 6, Core team values, it is stated that hierarchical style shold be avoided, and leader should maintain an enviornment where courtsey and mutual respect is conducted. Everyone, including leader himself, should be treated equally. It was also stated that by understandin each individual's talent and assigning work that suits the personal talent, that individual can feel the meaning of his/her existence in a team can become even more productive.
In chapter 7, Conflict, it is stated that conflict is inevitable, but how leaders stay proactive to it and how they handle it is the key element in leading the team successfuly.
So that is it. It seems kind of short for each 15-pages chapter, but I hope it will help grasping the basic content of each chapter. Bye.
